Empirical design


The project will be conducted as a longitudinal study in Viennese schools, using a combination of quantitative and qualitative methods. The results of the quantitative survey will be enriched and deepened by qualitative data.

Quantitative design


  • Use of self-developed as well as already existing questionnaires at all survey times
  • Testing of the research instruments in the course of a pilot phase at Viennese schools and subsequent adaptation
  • The questionnaires cover the following research dimensions: Academic achievement (intelligence, academic performance, self-efficacy, school self-concept), social participation and well-being at school

Qualitative design


  • Use of the photovoice method, in which students are asked to photograph objects and places within the school building that are considered significant in the context of their own socio-emotional development
  • Conducting a problem-centered interview after the transition to lower secondary school
